Biology Club-“High School Student Bio Summit”

On Wednesday, August 7th, the opening ceremony and online presentation of the first round (preliminary) of the 14th High School Student Bio Summit was held. It is organized by Keio University Institute of Advanced Life Sciences. On the afternoon of the 9th, the results of who would move to the second round was announced.

This year, like last year, the opening ceremony and the first round will be held on Zoom, and the second round will be held August 21st-23rd at the Tsuruoka Metabolic Campus Lecture Hall (Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture) for the first time in five year. It will be held in the form of a presentation.

The opening ceremony of the first round started with the opening declaration by Kazuharu Arakawa, the director of the Institute of Advanced Life Sciences at Keio University, and then the judges and student staff were introduced. In this first round, many powerful schools (regulars including our school) including SSH participated, so we had no choice but to do our best. The results are as follows: out of 56 results, 40 advance for the main presentation and for the plan presentation, 39 participants, 15 advance to the finals. A total of 63 schools participated with 178 participants.

In the first round, there was an announcement of the results presentation in the morning, and an announcement of the plan presentation in the afternoon. Online presentations were held in front of three judges each (10 mins total, 4 mins for the presentation of which the judges were strict, and then questions from the judges afterwards)

This time, second years from the biology club gave a presentation on “Clostridium tertium produces Butyric Acid” and the plan presentation was “Hairless Mouse Sunburn Prevention Effect and Intestinal Flora Improvement by Oral Intake of Caconibs”. Both were nervous at the time of the presentation but they finished within the prescribed time and responded to questions without delay.
